Ten Thousand Angels

I wrote about God’s love for us in my February 2022 blog post.  John 3:16 tells us; “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Someone who didn’t read any further might believe that Jesus had no choice in the matter.

   But he did.

Jesus left his home in heaven to live among the people he loved. He healed the sick and crippled, gave sight to the blind, and hearing to the deaf. He loved those people and he loves us today.

Jesus didn’t have to suffer or die. Psalm 91:11 says; “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”  Satan quoted that scripture when he was tempting Jesus in the desert.  (Matthew 4:1-11, Luke 4: 1-14)

Jesus knew what was coming. He knew that he was going to be beaten and die a horrible death.  He was in such anguish that he went to the garden of Gethsemane to pray. “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26:36-56, Mark 14:32-42, Luke 22:39-46)

He was arrested, spit on, mocked, and beaten. A crown of thorns was placed on his head. He was forced to carry his cross until his strength failed him. The insults and mocking continued as he was nailed to the cross and he died a slow death. (Matthew 27: 27-50, Mark 15: 16-37, Luke 23, John 19: 16-37)

Jesus was in agony as he hung on that cross. The insults and mocking continued. Despite all this, Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23: 34)

Why? Why would someone with such power endure all of the pain?

Because he loves us. He knew that the only way that he could save us from eternal damnation was to sacrifice himself. He died so that everyone could live eternity in heaven.

John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” Can you imagine loving someone so much that you’d willingly die for them?

That’s not the end of the story.

That tomb is empty. Jesus is alive. He rose from the grave. Many of his followers saw him and spoke with him. (Matthew 28: 5-7, Mark 16: 1-7, Luke 24: 1-7, John 20: 1-29)

It's because Jesus loves us all that he endured the crucifixion. It's because of his resurrection that we can all live in heaven. Jesus did his part for all of us. All we have to do is accept him as our Lord and Savior.

“Live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:2

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.” 1 John 3:16

No matter what you’re going through. No matter what you’ve done. No matter what you’ll do in the future. Jesus loves you so much that he died for you. He could have refused. He could have called ten thousand angels.

But he didn't. He gave his life so that we could live.

Ten Thousand Angels

by Ray Overholt

Verse 1

They bound the hands of Jesus
In the garden where He prayed
They led Him thro' the streets in shame
They spat upon the Savior
So pure and free from sin
They said crucify Him
He's to blame

Verse 2

Upon His precious head
They placed a crown of thorns
They laughed and said behold the King
They struck Him and they cursed Him
And mocked His holy name
All alone He suffered ev'rything

Verse 3

When they nailed Him to the cross
His mother stood nearby
He said woman behold thy Son
He cried I thirst for water
But they gave Him none to drink
Then the sinful work of man was done

Verse 4

To the howling mob, He yielded
He did not for mercy cry
The cross of shame He took alone
And when He cried it's finished
He gave Himself to die
Salvation's wondrous plan was done

Chorus

He could have called ten thousand angels
To destroy the world and set Him free
He could have called ten thousand angels
But He died alone for you and me
